Family profiles let children use Kalon on a shared Mac, iPhone or iPad with their own chats. A child profile is local only: it makes no network connections, and its restrictions cannot be switched off per child.
Turn it on
- On the Mac, open Settings › Family and turn on Family profiles. On iPhone, the switch is in the Family section of Settings.
- Choose Add a child and enter a Name and Birthday. Profiles are for children under 18.
- Choose How the assistant talks to them. Kalon suggests one from the child's age.
- Optionally set Their passcode, which stops a brother or sister opening their chats.
You can add up to five children. To switch profiles on the Mac, use the switch-profile button beside your name in the sidebar.
Turning Family profiles off hides the feature and deletes nothing. Turning it back on restores every profile.
What a child profile does
| In a child profile | |
|---|---|
| Chats | Separate from yours and from other children's. |
| Network | None. Online models, model downloads, Kalon Link, MCP servers over HTTP and media links are all blocked, whatever the household's settings. |
| Tools | No shell, MCP servers or plugins. |
| Build mode | Not available. |
| Settings | Cannot be opened. |
| Memory | Each child has their own notes. |
A child can use the local models already installed on the device.
How Kalon talks to a child
| Choice | Style | Suggested for |
|---|---|---|
| Little one | Very short answers, simple words, lots of encouragement. | Under 7 |
| In between | Clear explanations, a bit of detail, plain language. | 7 to 11 |
| Older | Fuller answers, proper terms, treats them as capable. | 12 and over |
Kalon also asks the model to say plainly when it does not know something, and to suggest asking a trusted adult about bodies, money or meeting people.
Replies are not filtered. The style is an instruction to the model, and a determined child can talk it around. For a firm boundary, use a macOS account and Screen Time.
Passcodes
With an app passcode set in Settings › Security, returning to your own space from a child's needs the passcode. The app passcode also opens any child's space, so a forgotten child passcode never locks you out. Without any passcode set, switching is open.
Screen time
Kalon counts the time each profile spends with Kalon open, in front, and unlocked, by day. It is Kalon's screen time, not the device's, and it sets no limits. Totals appear in Settings › Usage when Family profiles are on.
Weekly summary
Weekly summary is on by default once Family profiles are on. After each week ends, Kalon writes a short recap of the topics each child asked about and adds it to your chat list as a chat titled "Week of" and the date.
- It is always written by a local model on the device, never by an online model.
- It reports topics, not transcripts.
- The child's profile card tells them that a weekly list of what they asked about is shared at home.
Turn it off with Weekly summary in the same place.
What is stored
For each child, Kalon stores the name, birthday, chosen pet and style, an optional photo, and a salted hash of their passcode if one is set. Everything is kept in Kalon's database on the device and is included in encrypted backups. Nothing about a child is sent anywhere.
Removing a profile
Remove a profile from the family list. You can move their chats to your own space or delete everything they made.
