Troubleshooting

What Kalon's error messages mean and how to fix the most common problems with models, downloads, voice, the local API, MCP and Kalon Link.

Models

"is too large for this device's memory"

The model cannot fit your memory even with a smaller context. The message says roughly how much more is needed. Choose a smaller model or a smaller quantization of the same one. See Models and memory.

"Download a model in Models, then pick it from the menu above."

No model is installed. Download one in Settings › Models, then choose it in the model menu.

"No model is loaded"

You ejected the model to free memory. Pick one from the model menu to continue.

Replies are slow

  • Very large models, and mixture-of-experts models that are larger than your memory, read weights from disk and run slowly.
  • If the model was loaded with only part of it on the GPU, a smaller model or quantization will be faster.
  • GET /api/plan?model=<id> on the local API shows how a model would be loaded on your Mac, including how many layers go to the GPU.

Downloads

"Kalon is sealed"

Block all network access is on. Turn it off in Settings › Online models on the Mac, or in the Privacy section of Settings on iPhone, then download again.

A download stopped

Downloads resume from where they stopped. Start it again from the model's card. On iPhone, a download that iOS paused in the background shows the percentage it reached; tap Resume.

"Not enough space" on iPhone

The phone needs the model's size plus some room to spare. Free up storage or choose a smaller model.

Nothing downloads in a child profile

Child profiles use no network, including downloads. Switch to your own profile to download models.

Online models

"online models are off"

You selected an online model while Use online models is off. Turn it on in Settings › Online models, or choose a local model.

"this is a child profile"

Child profiles are local only. Online models cannot be used in them.

Voice and dictation

Dictate anywhere does nothing

  • Check that Dictate anywhere is on in Settings › Voice.
  • Install a Whisper model. Dictation needs whisper:base or whisper:small; a Moonshine model alone is not enough.
  • Allow Kalon to use the microphone in System Settings.
  • If text lands on the clipboard instead of in the app, grant Kalon Accessibility access in System Settings so it can paste for you.
  • Dictation is not available in password fields.

Voice mode says to add a model

Voice mode on the Mac needs a Whisper or Moonshine model. Download one in Settings › Models.

Record a new voice is dimmed

Cloning needs the Qwen3 TTS pack. Download it under Neural voices in Settings › Voice.

Documents and tools

"LibreOffice not found"

The document tools (doc_draft, doc_convert, make_slides, make_sheet, and doc_preview for Office files) need LibreOffice. The message tells you how to install it.

An image was read as text

The selected model cannot see images, so Kalon sent the text it recognized in the image. Choose a model marked with the image glyph.

Local API

The server will not start

Another app is using the port. Change Port in Settings › Developer, or quit the other app.

403 "invalid Host header"

The request used a host name. Address the Mac as localhost from the same Mac, or by its IP address from another device.

404 "is not installed in Kalon"

The model value must be the id of an installed model, exactly as GET /v1/models lists it.

400 "no model is loaded in Kalon"

The request left model empty and no model is selected in the app. Pass a model id, or choose a model in the app.

503 "too many queued requests" or "timed out after 300s"

Requests to the same model run one at a time. Wait for earlier requests to finish, or send fewer at once.

MCP servers

A server shows "couldn't connect"

  • Command to launch needs the full path of the program, for example /opt/homebrew/bin/npx rather than npx. This also applies to plugin servers.
  • Check the server's arguments and environment variables in Configure.
  • Click Reconnect after fixing the problem.

A server's tools are not used

Turn on In chat for the server, and turn on Agent mode in the chat.

"this Mac is not on a private network"

Kalon Link only listens on private network addresses. Connect the Mac to your home or office network.

The pairing code does not work

Codes expire after five minutes and work once. After five wrong attempts the code closes. Click Show code on the Mac for a new one.

The phone cannot reach the Mac

  • Both devices must be on the same network.
  • Check that Use this Mac from your phone or iPad is still on and Kalon is running on the Mac.
  • On the phone, check that Block all network access is off.
